Industrial Images

Old industrial buildings, with their unusual items, present opportunities by using light and shadows for creating dramatic images.

In 2004, Dale had the opportunity of photographing inside the Lunenburg Foundry in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Given only an hour and never being in the foundry before, she had to quickly identify her subjects. Within that time frame, she created several images with the three best from the older part of the foundry. Propellers contrasts the shapes with the straight lines. In the Workshop, Dale creates the atmosphere that you are standing in the middle of the workshop. Her use of textures, for the image Furnace highlighted the essence of the subject. To create these photographs, she used natural lighting, which was limited, and an aperture setting of F22.

The A. R. Williams Machinery Company building, in Toronto's Liberty Village, is part of our past. Currently it is being used as a condominium sales office. View #1 and View #2 are classic examples of how Dale uses light to create dramatic ambience. She released them in her 2004 Contact Toronto Photography Festival Exhibition called, 'Enter'; and also used them in her 2008 Contact Exhibition called, 'Gentrification - The Sell-out of our Heritage?' The developer wanted to demolish the building for a development project; the city said no! Hopefully, the developer will make it a public space for everyone to enjoy.
