Still Life Images

Pears are a passion for Dale. Her logo is based on one of her first still life pictures, the Pear Affair #2. The 'Pear Affair' is a reflection of two of her characteristics... artistic style and creativity. At the 5th Annual Black and White Spider Awards, her Pear Affair #2 image was nominated in the Still Life - Professional category.

Since her first venture into still life photography, she has added further work focusing on pears. In 2005, her Contact Toronto Photography Festival Exhibition was called 'Interpretations'. It explored the viewers' thoughts and feelings of primarily pears, positioned in different arrangements.

In 2008, she ingnored conventional horizontal presentation of pears and produced two pieces vertically called Marching Pears at Night and Daytime Marching Pears. As part of creating her artwork, Dale is not afraid to push the envelope.

In 2009, she introduced two groupings of pears - 'Dessert Pears' and 'Pears Dancing in the Rain'.

The 'Dessert Pears' is a play on words. In fact, she created a desert scene in her studio. With the use of several bags of play sand, a cactus plant and a blue back drop, the scene was created. By strategically positioning the pears, use of lighting and a red filter to create richness in the sky, she created a series of three unique pictures. The idea of 'Dessert Pears' was an extension of her 'Marching Pears'.

Many of you may watch 'Do You Think You Can Dance', this is the basis for starting a series of 'Pears Dancing in the Rain'. To create the scene, she built a pool in the studio to catch the water and used a watering can or hose nozzle to create the rain. Each of the dance styles will be a set of three pictures to represent three dance positions.

The first dance style, the 'Jive' was a very challenging set of pictures to create. In fact, she had to shoot these pictures five times over about a month. The lighting, positioning of the pears and the angle of the shot were very critical to achieve the activity in the pictures. After each shoot, she would print and study the pictures and make alterations for the next shoot. On her fifth shoot, she decided to try something for the first time... 'a double exposure'. It worked!

Feedback for Jiving in the Rain, has been very positive; people are saying the images are fun. In fact, one viewer very familiar with photographic artwork said 'I can feel the music in the pictures.'

The second dance style, the 'Tango' presented Dale with a different set of challenges. Unlike the 'Jive" which is fun, flirty and lively, she had to change the scene to be romantic and seductive. First, she used the Italian Pear instead of the Bosc Pear because the Italian Pear is taller and slender and more a reflection of a tango dancer. Secondly, she reduced the amount of rain to create a softer feel.

In 2007, Contact Toronto Photography Festival's theme was 'Constructed Images'. For this exhibition, she expanded her still life portfilio by including stiletto heels. The combination of the Peace Lily with the stiletto's created a strong suggestion of eroticism. The photographs are called Spike and Peace, Danger Cobra #1 and Danger Cobra #2.
